The rule in Washington is:
If it’s controversial or a hot vote,
POSTPONE IT,
That’s the way the politicians in Washington do.
And why we have had nothing done on immigration,
Put off for over thirty years.
Only giving more time for the wound to fester,
Until one day a worse social infection sets in..
That’s what the politicians do,
If it’s a hot vote,
Don’t handle it! Put it off!
If it’s easy,
Why handle it?
As you don’t really have to vote on it,
It’s easy. It can wait.
Everybody loves to wait in Washington,
The pay checks come in regularly just the same,
Do or not do?
Is not the question,
Why do? is the option
If it’s a loaded political question, put it off,
If it’s not why do it now?
And if they are finally forced to vote,
They follow he party,
Voting without thinking is that mindless game.
You know if we had some direct voting on issues,
By the people, where anywhere it ought to be,
The people might get some things done,
The nation might not have to wait twenty years.
The people aren’t afraid, they don’t have to get re-elected,
They are not traumatized by the very idea of facing up to issues..
The people can just ring in on the telephone during the right hours.
Or access the internet and vote in.
Giving their name, social security number and secret pin.
And the indisputable will of the people,
Will come in.
